Spector indicted on murder charge

September 28, 2004

What? No white van being pursued down the freeway in LA? No Judge Ito? Not even a Kato? With the lack of real reporting going on these days, you’ld think the press would be all over this one (guess they prefer x-jocks). . .

Pop producer Phil Spector is indicted on a charge that he murdered an actress at his home 19 months ago. [BBC News]

What The Bleep Do We Know?

September 25, 2004

What the Bleep Do We Know tackles the philosophical realm of Quantum Physics.
It’s a sort of documentary/ dramatization of the meaning of life.
At times the dramatization portion seems a bit juvenile and forced
making the film appear more like a Philosophy 101 instructional video,
but it does visualize some of the complex concepts well.  One of
the more interesting segments involves the power of thought and it’s
effect on the environment.  Japanese Dr. Masaru Emoto tested
how negative and positive words taped to a glass of water actually
affect the compositon of the water’s molecules (positive statements make
the water crystals appear harmonious, negative ones distorted).
The film is definetely worth a watch.

Accusations on Detention of Ex-Singer

September 23, 2004

Who will they detain next? Jello Biafra? Zack de la Rocha? A Beastie?

United
Airlines and the Department of Homeland Security blamed each other
because the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens was allowed on a
flight. [The New York Times]

Single Frame

September 22, 2004

I haven’t been to Austin, Texas, but I hear it’s my kind of place.  I’ve yet to attend an Austin City Limits Fest, but perhaps some day.  If the band Single Frame is any indication of the rumblings of Austin, then I’d sure like to make it down there soon.  Listen for yourselves:

Ian MacKaye

September 19, 2004

Ian MacKaye is an interesting fellow.  As well as running Dischord
Records
for over the past 20 years, you may also know him as the guitar
player/singer of the band Fugazi.  Every interview I have ever
seen/read with Ian has been engaging and straighforward. To
say the least, he’s probably one of the most
misunderstood musicians in rock music today. Probably
because he’s never relied on the corporate kiss ass approach to his
music.  He has always done it his way. Anyway, I recently found an
audio file interview he did in the past few years and it was
great.  Just thought I’d like to pass it on to all of you (by Glen Murrell).

Arkham

September 18, 2004

The band Arkham hails from
Orange County, CA.  That’s about all they’ll tell you on their
website (aside from other little things they might or might not like
you to know).  They’ve got a new album out called The Freak Power Candidate.  Check out the tune below.

The Ex

September 15, 2004

You may have not heard of them before, but Netherlands own The Ex,
have been operating as a band for the past 25 years. This fall, the
band is doing a series of concerts in Amsterdam, France and
Brussels to celebrate their 25th anniversary.  Quite a feat
for a band who are virtually unknown here in the states, yet they are
an incredible live act. In 1999, Joel and I had the pleasure of seeing
them open up for Fugazi and we were both amazed. Their drummer,
Katherina, is one of the most intense and creative drummers I have ever
seen. The band is currently embarking on a US tour, so if you get the
chance, don’t miss’em. Check out The Ex : Listen to the Painters a free tune from their upcoming release. (by Glen M.)

Antibalas

September 11, 2004

I’ve been listening to a lot of Fela Kuti lately.  Some friends mentioned I should also check out Antibalas.  Love ‘em both (guess I’m feeling a bit political these days).  Here’s a sampling:

Soundtrack Stories: Part 2

September 9, 2004

Here’s another story by Farhad Parsa called “Cupidís Trick” from his series of stories about Adriana.  To accompany this short piece, I relay to you what I believe to be some of Stephen Malkmus‘ best work (no offense to Pavement).  Photo’s by Farhad.

Stephen Malkmus : “(Do Not Feed The) Oysterî

Cupid’s Trick

Adriana is five feet tall. Adriana
is Chilean but grew up in Las Vegas. Her dad ran a casino. She laughs
when I pronounce cauliflower. She used to entertain in Las Vegas. ëNot
stripí, she quickly says. ëI would engage in conversation with men at
the bar and I would recommend that they should go to the show next
door. I would also let them buy me drinks like a rum and coke, which of
course, would be straight 7-up or coke, but weíd charge them for top
shelf.í

Now is the time: Joanna Newsome

September 6, 2004

Just came across a video on the Drag City site for Joanna Newsome’s “Sprouted & the Bean”.  I can’t over emphasize how “wowed” I was by her performance at the Bottom of the Hill
She sat on stage with all of her 20 years and 90 pounds straddling a
massive harp.  Listen and watch for yourselves (and do buy the
album, it’s amazing):

Also came across a preview of the new RTX offering out on Drag City as well.
