A fist-full of Punk to get the weekend started

October 9, 2004

Here in San Francisco we don’t celebrate Columbus Day.  Instead we
celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.  I think that’s pretty
punk.  Therefore, I convey to you a celebratory selection of Punk
Rock!

“They… brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many
other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’
bells. They willingly traded everything they owned…. They were
well-built, with good bodies and handsome features…. They do not bear
arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by
the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their
spears are made of cane…. They would make fine servants…. With
fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we
want.” (cited form the diaries of Columbus)

Lennon’s killer in new parole bid

October 3, 2004

I say let ‘em stay a bit longer. . .

“Mark Chapman, the man who killed Beatle John Lennon, faces his third parole hearing next week.” [Read the article from BBC News here]

Wilco, again.

October 3, 2004

I’m just bunny hoppin’ off of one of the elite mp3 sites out there (can’t remember if it was Tofu, Fuzzy or *6eyes), but regardless of who you must check out these live tracks of a recent Wilco concert dated 9/22/04 in Nashville.  It’s put up by a site called Aging Rapidly
Great sound as well.  I must say that I only turned my ears to
Wilco a few months back after mindlessly labeling them some sort of jam
band phenomenom ala Phish or Dave Mathews, but hell was I completely
wrong.  A Ghost is Born
is by far my favorite recording of the year.  Tweedy is a serious
lyrical and musical talent (and a real pain in the ass apparently–but
that’s usually the case with true artists).  Enough talk, go here.

More Fuel for the Firestorm

October 3, 2004

On Saturday I attended one of the many political fund raisers for John
Kerry (or better said: the Anti-Bushers). At this party a couple had
driven all the way up from LA to sell t-shirts with all the proceeds
going to progressive political groups. Their company is called Clothing of the American Mind. Here are some of the wares (please buy one):

Life of Meaning: Part 4

October 3, 2004

For the past four years I’ve been a genuine fan of the Oakland
Athletics
.  It was a hard transition for a man born in Queens, NY
who grew up a Yankee fan (that’s right, not a Mets fan) to make the
transition.  Now a transplanted San Franciscan (not a total Giants
fan either), my life has taken a new turn, one that realizes that Major
League Baseball
is an unfair corporation.  But I will not go on
for pages listing the reasons why the A’s didn’t make the playoffs (and
there are many) or neither will I complain about the amount of money it
takes to create teams like those in the playoffs (correct me if I’m
wrong: 500 million combined? Minnesota being the only exception).  All I will say is that I am
disappointed and will drown my sorrows in some deeply depressing
music.  Will you join me?

David Singer

October 2, 2004

I’ve alway’s loved the sounds that come out of Chicago.  It’s a town that’s given us the likes of Tortoise, the Sea & Cake, Jim O’Rourke and countless other innovators of the new pop.  One less known artist by the name of David Singer brings together a sound that is not entirely Chicago, but a bit of everything from Elliot Smith to A.C. Newman.  He’s got a free tune for all to hear and an album available on Apple’s I-Tunes music store.
